About Dr. Long

Dr. Lynette Long is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Dr. Long received her Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry, a Master of Science in Mathematics and a Doctorate in Educational and Counseling Psychology, all from the University of Illinois. In addition to almost twenty years in private practice, Dr. Long has served as a high school mathematics teacher, a school principal, the clinical director of an in-patient drug rehabilitation center, and a college professor.

Dr. Long has served full-time on the faculties of The Catholic University of America, Loyola College in Maryland, and the University of Maryland, Asian Division, where she taught in both Japan and Korea. She has taught both undergraduate and graduate-level psychology and education classes including: Introductory Psychology, Child Development, Adolescent Development, Counseling Theory and Practice, Educational Psychology, Interpersonal Relationships, Human Sexuality, and Statistics.

Dr. Long is the author of twenty books including numerous psychological titles. She is probably best known for “The Handbook for Latchkey Children and Their Working Parents,” which she wrote with her former husband. She also wrote a book on therapeutic questioning entitled, “Questioning Skills for the Helping Professional.”

Dr. Long has also published extensively in trade and professional journals. Dr. Long has published in Ms. Magazine, McCall’s Working Mother, Essence and Instructor. She has appeared on hundreds of radio and television programs including The Today Show, CBS Morning News, Al Jezeera News, Fox News, The Phil Donahue Show and Geraldo. Dr. Long hosted her own call-in radio show for AFN, One-on-One with Dr. Lynette Long, where she answered questions of a psychological nature.
