Anxiety Treatment

Anxiety is a common but often crippling psychological problem. When we let anxiety make our decisions for us, we are often not happy with the outcome. Anxiety comes in many shapes and sizes. Some people suffer from generalized anxiety disorder, meaning they have a pervasive sense of anxiety not associated with any specific situation. Others have specific anxieties or phobias. The effective treatment of anxiety requires a multi-faceted approach, the center of which is changing the way we see ourselves and the world around us. Here is a list of some of the essential keys to treating anxiety:

Individual Psychotherapy – There is an expression in therapy, “If you’re depressed you’re living in the past and if you’re anxious you’re living in the future.” People who are anxious are notorious for predicting the future, and unfortunately their predictions are almost universally bad. Individual psychotherapy can help you live in the present and reduce anxiety-producing “fortunetelling.” In addition, therapy can help you identify the patterns and triggers embedded in your anxiety.

Exercise – Exercise increases serotonin levels, elevates mood, and provides a general sense of well-being. Exercise has the added benefit of improving one’s appearance, which generally leads to an increase in self-esteem and reduction in all types of anxiety.

Sleep - The establishment of a regular sleep cycle and good sleep hygiene is an important step in reducing anxiety. Too little sleep exacerbates anxiety and makes someone more vulnerable to triggers.

Alcohol Moderation - Many people who suffer from anxiety self-medicate with alcohol. Alcohol can reduce anxiety but excessive amounts of alcohol can lead to depression.

Meditation and Yoga - The practice of meditation and/or yoga helps you slow and monitor your thoughts. Meditation and/or yoga practice are both excellent tools in the treatment of anxiety.

Medication - Appropriate anti-anxiety medication prescribed and monitored by a psychiatrist can help in the treatment of anxiety. There are numerous anti-anxiety medications, but they fall into two general categories: medications taken as needed and medications taken on a daily basis. Your psychiatrist will help you pick a medication that is appropriate for you.
